OnePlus 5/5T Get Portrait Selfies With Latest OxygenOS Beta

OnePlus has started rolling out the OxygenOS Open Beta 17 for the OnePlus 5 and the Open Beta 15 for the OnePlus 5T which include, among other things, support for portrait selfies. We recently received the update on our OnePlus 5/5T devices, which means that the update has already started rolling out in the country.

According to the changelog listed on the OnePlus forums, the latest OxygenOS beta update brings the following changes:

System

• Added Toast message source for Toast messages sent by background apps
• Added description about sleep standby optimizations when the function is turned on    for the first time
• Optimized background power consumption control
• Fixed call recording issue in India
• Updated Android security patch to 2018.8

Camera

• Added portrait mode for the front camera

Gaming mode 3.0

• Added call suspension notification
• Added text notification mode
• UI and interaction optimization

 

Weather

• Hourly weather forecast
• 8 units of meteorological data including precipitation probability and Perceived temperature
• Improved weather data accuracy

 

Note

• New OxygenOS UI
• Optimized process for sharing notes as an image

As you can see, the portrait selfies are just okayish and have some issues with edge detection. Even the bokeh effect is quite subdued. However, since the feature is still in beta, we can expect OnePlus to improve further improve the quality of the portrait selfies before it’s introduced in the stable channel.

Other than the portrait selfies, the beta update brings a few quality of life changes that have been listed above and it updates the devices to the August Android security patch. As of now, OnePlus hasn’t revealed its timeline to release the new portrait selfie feature to the stable channel, but since it has already made it to the beta channel it shouldn’t be long before it is released for all OnePlus 5/5T users.
